Overview: The Brigham Young University EMBA Program is specifically designed for the working professional who has at least five years of full-time professional supervisory, or administrative employment and wishes to complete and MBA program by following an evening or weekend module of classes. The school is committed to attracting and developing women and men of character, intelligence, and professional ability. In addition, the school aims to allow students to advance their knowledge using strong conceptual foundations to indentify and solve management problems in every day life; this is done by focusing on global, technological and entrepreneurial ventures.
Program Format: The program is offered on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah or at the BYU Salt Lake Center. Students attend class year-round with breaks in December and July. Residency week occurs at the beginning of each year on the Provo campus during which time students spend time in intensive course instruction and group work. At the end of the second year of the program students participate in a two-week long international trip (Foreign Business Excursion) and travel to different locations throughout the world to visit international businesses.
Program Schedule: The EMBA program with Brigham Young University takes 24 months to complete. Classes are taught on Fridays and Saturdays. Classes begin in August, and end two years later in July. New classes begin in Salt Lake during even-numbered years (2012 and 2014) and in Provo during odd-numbered years (2013 and 2015).
Curriculum: The EMBA program requires 54 credit hours of work. The program’s curriculum approaches management with six core areas of study: finance, operations, international business, accounting, organizational behavior, and marketing. The program is designed to provide broad management training. The curriculum is supplemented with hands-on work experience and the opportunity to immediately apply and test management theories and newly acquired skills. The course schedule is structured to help students maintain a balance while juggling work, school, and personal/family commitments.
Core Courses: Core courses for the EMBA program are Introduction to Management (a five day, on-campus residency training course), Corporate Financial Reporting, Leadership, Identifying and Developing Convictions, Strengths and Competencies, Spreadsheet Analysis, Finance, Human Resource Management, Managerial Accounting, Marketing, Operations Management, Global Business Negotiations, and Foreign Business Excursion (International trip).
Electives are also offered. Some elective courses include Advanced Corporate Finance, Customer Loyalty, Business Judgment, Business Negotiations, Entrepreneurial Marketing, Project Management, and Strategic Issues and Operations.
Class Profile: Each class (In Provo and Salt Lake) has an average of 65 students. The average age is 36, and the average amount of professional work experience is 11 years.
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the EMBA program with Brigham Young University must submit an undergraduate degree from an accredited university or college. Applicants must showcase evidence of management and leadership skills (average is 11 years for professional work experience). A grade point average must be above 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate work (average is 3.4). A competitive GMAT score is also expected (generally scores above 560 are competitive; average score for admitted applicants is 640).
Applicants are also expected to demonstrate a commitment to the Brigham Young University and its sponsoring organization, the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints. In addition, all admitted applicants must proficiency exams in Accounting and Statistics. Interviews are granted by invitation only, but are not required for admittance.
